Old Synagogue in Namysłów

Add to the planner

The building of the Namysłów synagogue was erected in 1856. The rectangular, masonry structure also housed a mikvah. During the so-called “Kristallnacht” (the night from 9th to 10th November 1938), Nazis set fire to the church and pillaged the interior, but the building itself survived. After the war, it was turned into a gym for the nearby high school and still serves as a sports facility for the local Youth Fostering Centre.

In 2016, at the initiative of the students of the Tadeusz Kościuszko Agricultural School, a memorial plaque was uncovered on the wall of the old synagogue. The ceremony took place on the 160th anniversary of the completion of the church. The inscriptions on the plaque are written in Polish, German, English and Hebrew.
